so you're going to marry a selkie

Selkies are irish mythological creatures that turn from seal to human and back again. They remain a seal until they choose to shed their skin, then they turn human. They keep the seal pelt and if they wish to return to the sea, put it on again to go back to seal form. They typically take the form of a Greenland seal or a Crested seal. It is also extremely bad luck to kill a selkie, or a seal associated with a selkie, often leading to misfortune or even death. In many legends and stories, a human falls in love with a selkie, and hides their pelt so that they will stay human forever. More often than not, the selkie longs for the sea, finds the pelt, and leaves the person and the life they had together, no matter how much they loved it. It is also said that if their partner sheds seven tears into the sea, their selkie companion will show up.
